The Core Components
A mommy makeover is not a single standardised procedure but rather a tailored combination of surgeries designed to address the physical changes that pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding leave behind. While the exact combination varies between patients, most mommy makeovers include three core components.
The abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, addresses the abdominal area. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and often separates the rectus abdominis muscles, a condition called diastasis recti. A tummy tuck removes excess skin, tightens the underlying muscle wall, and restores a flatter abdominal contour. The extent of the tummy tuck can range from a mini abdominoplasty for mild laxity to a full abdominoplasty for more significant changes.
Breast surgery is the second major component. The specific breast procedure depends on the patient's concerns. Some women experience volume loss and sagging after breastfeeding and benefit from a breast lift, an augmentation, or a combination of both. Others may have breasts that remain larger than desired and opt for a breast reduction. The goal is to restore a breast shape and size that the patient feels comfortable with.
Liposuction is frequently included to contour areas where stubborn fat deposits remain despite diet and exercise. Common treatment areas include the flanks, outer thighs, and lower abdomen. Liposuction complements the tummy tuck by refining the overall body silhouette.
Additional Procedures That May Be Included
Beyond the three core components, some patients add further procedures to their mommy makeover. These can include a Brazilian butt lift using fat harvested during liposuction, labiaplasty to address changes in the vulvar area after childbirth, or skin treatments to improve stretch marks and skin texture.
The range of possible additions depends on the patient's priorities and the surgeon's assessment of what can be safely performed in a single session. Combining too many procedures at once increases operative time and may affect recovery, so the surgeon will advise on what is practical and safe. Consult your surgeon about which combination of procedures best addresses your specific concerns.
Why a Combined Approach
The primary advantage of combining procedures into a single session is efficiency. One operation means one period of general anaesthesia, one set of post-operative restrictions, and one recovery timeline rather than multiple separate surgeries spaced months apart.
For many patients, the combined approach is more practical from a scheduling and personal standpoint. It allows them to take a single extended recovery period rather than arranging multiple blocks of downtime. However, a combined surgery is longer and more involved than any single procedure performed alone, and the initial recovery may be more demanding.
Patients who prefer a more gradual approach or who have medical considerations that make a longer operation inadvisable may choose staged procedures instead. This is a valid alternative, and the surgeon will discuss the timing considerations during the consultation.
Personalisation Is Key
No two mommy makeovers are identical. The selection of procedures, the techniques used, and the extent of each component are all determined during the consultation based on a physical examination and a detailed discussion of the patient's goals. What one patient needs to feel restored may be entirely different from another.
This individualised approach is what makes a mommy makeover effective. Rather than applying a standard formula, the surgeon designs a surgical plan that targets the specific areas of concern for each patient and delivers a cohesive result.
